So I ventured off to Brooklyn one day with my brother, his friend and my fiance. My brothers friend wanted a chihuahua and had found a pet store in Brooklyn that supplied “toy” breeds, I had no intention of buying a dog….I was only a passenger. So we walk into the pet store and immediatly I was overjoyed by the sight, smell, and sounds coming from one of the most precious things in this world, PUPPIES! Now everyone who knows me, knows that they can not take me into a pet store and expect me to leave empty handed. As I walked around putting my fingers through the cage openings I feel a little bite and tug on one of my fingers, and I look down and spot this tiny little black and tan tike. She looked at me and my heart melted and I knew right then she was coming home with me. Next comes the negotiation with a man who looked like he was trippin on something serious….He told me that small dogs can have low blood sugar and to make sure I give the dog gatorade….Yes, he told me to give my puppy a sports drink. This was the first small dog I have ever had to care for. I was used to our Labs and my brothers Shepard, Diesel.
The entire ride home I was trying to think of the perfect name for my little angel. We thought of name, after name, after name….then finally…Lulu stuck. I had her all of two weeks when out of no where she had these tiny spots on her back…they looked like the spots on baby deer…but the thing was she was losing hair in the spots. I let it go about a week then she started to get sick, it progressed (mutated is a better word) into this viral, fungal, bacterial infection. Her little 3lb body was covered in oozing scabby patches, her nose was leaking green, and her ears where infected. I thought she was going to die…but I was not gonna give up on her. She had frequent trips to the vet (you can imagine the vet bills). Turns out aside from her infection, she was malnourished, had kennel cough, and was not fit for sale.
I contacted the store where I bought her and the owner simply said if i brought the dog back he would return my money. I told him there wasn’t a chance in hell he was getting the dog back (she would have ended up in the garbage at this point) New Jersey law says that if the dog was not fit for sale, the store must refund the money and I would be able to keep her, too bad NY is very different.
So my Lu ad I took the long road to recovery together. Thanks to my mom for being there for Lulu when I was at work. She held her in blankets and towels because touching the welts and scabs all over her body by hand made her cry. After months of dealing with this, she finally made a turn for the better…she was finally overcoming the infection.
Lulu turned out to be one of the most amazing dogs a person could own. She did not bark once until she was 4months old. She is still the snuggle bunny she has always been. She love laying in the sun (like her mom) and being under the covers. Yes, this baby girl is spoiled rotten, and she loves it.
Now she is 4 and a half yrs old and seeing her perched on the edge of the couch waiting for me to grab her when i come home from work feels the same as the first day I held her. Everybody loves a DA LU!
